Review Overview
8.6

JBL Endurance Peak 3 True Wireless earbuds offer all the essential features and are the next generation of the JBL Endurance Peak II. The ear hook design has mostly stayed the same, but the brand increased the waterproof rating to IP68 to resist water and dust. It is fully water-resistant and protects your buds from anything you might encounter at the gym or during intense conditions.

You can also find a companion app that supports customizing the bud's settings, which was unavailable in its predecessor. These earphones also deliver a quality sound experience with admirable bass depth.

Unfortunately, they lack Active Noise Cancellation (ANC), but every other feature of the experience is top-notch. The durable and secure design makes them perfect for running trails, cycling, or jumping exercises in the gym.

Earbuds Review

With booming bass and a stable fit, these earpieces are a worthy competitor in the workout earbuds market. Their touch-sensitive controls are split between the Left and right buds, and they are responsive; users can receive feedback while registering commands. You can also listen to voice feedback when turning the Ambient Mode on or off.

However, their design could be more comfortable than those of competitors like Skullcandy Push Active and Beats PowerBeats Pro. They come in four color variants: black, White, Blue, and Orange. The logo is marked on the earphones’ side. They are bigger than conventional TWS buds but still portable. These buds do not break any molds as they are the third generation of JBL ear hook earphones.

The power hook feature uses magnets at the tips to power down the earpieces when users take them off. This feature helps you save power without returning them to their case. The weak point is that touch controls can be touchy and more responsive.

Design and Secure Fit

JBL Endurance Peak 3 is available in four colors: black, White, Blue, and Orange. You can find three pairs of silicone ear tips in small, medium, and large sizes. The sport ear hook reaches over the ear to help the units connect gently into place. This results in an exceptionally secure fit, and they won’t fall even during intense workout sessions. Wearing glasses remains comfortable because hooks don’t interfere with thick frames, which is not the case for most models with this design. You can gain a frequency of 20Hz to 20KHz range with an impedance of 16 ohms through the 10mm dynamic drivers.

The buds’ ear hooks function as a power switch. Each time the tips contact the earphone body, the unit turns off, but sometimes, this implementation can get annoying. If you want to remove them from your ears temporarily, avoid the tips from touching the body lest they power off. Pairing JBL Endurance Peak 3 with your device for the first time can be tricky until you recognize that the ear hook ends can’t touch the enclosure, which they do by default. You can read this requirement from the quick-start guide documentation in the box.

Design and Secure Fit of JBL Endurance Peak 3

You can drop the earbuds into a sizeable case bigger than most and difficult to carry in jeans pockets. It is similarly bulky to the buds, taking up the same space as at least two Beats Fit Pro cases. It is not for somebody who wants slim earpieces and a case to pop in while on a treadmill. Sometimes, they can even get uncomfortable after a while, primarily because of their large ear hooks. It happens because they fill up the ear canal opening and are continuously pressed in by the ear hook.

Noise Cancellation

The JBL Endurance Peak 3 lacks active noise cancellation. However, with a good seal and a volume level, these buds did an impressive job of reducing external noise. They don’t entirely block out the gym stereo system and traffic noise, but they don’t let that sound soak in and drown out audio. Moreover, the ear plug-like design helps cut external noise and sound leaking into the environment with passive noise cancellation.

Noise Cancellation Feature of JBL Endurance Peak 3

The Ambient Aware mode lets you keep in tune with the surrounding sounds. However, if the volume is reasonably loud, it sounds similar to when it is not enabled. The earpieces also offer a Talk Thru mode, but it doesn’t make it comfortable to speak to another person without having to take the earphones out of the ears. With this mode, speech is amplified, and music is lowered, which will help users to have quick chats with their friends and belongings. Press and hold the right earbud for 1 second to activate the Talk Thru mode.

With the earphones in, most low- to mid-frequency noise up to 1 kHz will sound around fifty percent as loud. Instead, most high-frequency noise of more than 1 kHz will be cut by about seventy-five percent. However, you should check other noise-canceling buds like the TOZO NC9 Plus Hybrid earbuds to block out maximum noise. During the testing in a simulated wind environment, much of the dialogue is inaudible amid the slightly overenthusiastic noise suppression.

Waterproof Rating

JBL continues to up the wager with its water-resistant ratings, offering an IP68 rating for JBL Endurance Peak 3. Their waterproof rating is better than that of their predecessor, which had an IP67, but they are not designed for swimming. With the improvement in the IP rating, this pair of earpieces has become more durable and stands firmly against water.

These fully dustproof earphones can be submerged at depths beyond a meter for over half an hour. This rating ensures they are fine for a sweaty workout and a downpour.

You can confidently wash them off under a faucet when they get dusty. On the other hand, the big charging case has an IPX4 waterproof rating, ensuring it stays safe in sweaty jeans. However, try not to put wet buds back in the case. Because of its low rating, it is advised not to submerge the case underwater. The case has a slippery surface, making it difficult to open with damp or sweaty hands. A silicone lip on the lid or a rubber exterior would improve the handling experience.

Water Proof Rating of JBL Endurance Peak 3

The newer version is virtually waterproof and can withstand quite a bit of debris. The IP68 rating is a bonus for skiers, rock climbers, or people who face extreme weather conditions. A person still needs to rinse them clean after getting them sweaty or immersing them in salt water. But it should be challenging to kill these effects by doing anything short of skin diving.

The IP rating keeps the earbuds dry inside for long periods of immersion under pressure. The manufacturer is confident in the combination of water-resistant grips and calls them waterproof.

Playtime

Battery life has improved greatly for earphones, but having enough power to last hours is essential. Power time is the major bright point of JBL Endurance Peak 3, and the brand promises 10 hours of playtime.

Playtime of JBL Endurance Peak 3

However, with calls, the earpieces can survive for 5.5 hours on a single charge. The big charging case’s perk is that it stores four full charges of the earphones. The case provides an additional 40 hours of playback, extending to 50 hours. With their claimed playing hours, they stand at the top among competitors in the market.

Using features like the transparency mode will affect the battery’s overall life. I tested them by switching off these features—especially the Ambient Sound Control—and found they can survive as advertised. The power drops 10% every hour I play music with them. You can easily take them out on holiday for an entire week without bringing the charging cable.

The buds can be fully charged in around two hours, and with a fast charge of one minute, you can enjoy one hour of playback. The auto-off timer conserves battery life when not in use. Additionally, JBL has no power-killing features like active noise cancellation to drain the battery. I give them a five out of five rating regarding battery life because they can meet the active routine.

JBL App

The JBL headphones app is available for iOS and Android users. After connecting the earphones with the app, the app shows an image of the product on the main screen. It also displays the battery life readout for both buds separately. Below this, you can find the Ambient Sound Control and Talk Thru modes, which you can switch on or off. After scrolling down, you can see the equalizer section where you can select between different presets.

You can also create a custom EQ curve in the EQ section with up to 21 points in testing. The custom adjustments make a clear difference in the sound profile, and the testing point ranges from 32Hz to 16KHz. The EQ is among the best I have tested in companion apps. You can also customize several taps in the gesture section. After that, you can see a Voice Aware section, where you can adjust the call voice.

Android users can also assign Google Assistant access to a press-and-hold gesture on the earphone of their choice. Another option allows you to switch between the audio and video modes automatically. The latter offers HD audio at the expense of slightly more latency, whereas the former cuts latency so dialogues match with mouth gestures on screen. The JBL companion app also offers the standard options for updating firmware and switching voice prompts. Overall, I like the app experience as it makes earpiece use effective and easy.

Sound Quality

I find the JBL Endurance Peak 3 sounds out of the box with its extreme bass boost. Music tracks such as “The Knife’s Silent Shout” have intense sub-bass, and the earbuds deliver mighty low-end thump. The earphones do not misrepresent the top volume levels and produce solid bass depth at more moderate volumes. Gym rats and runners usually enjoy a giant bass to motivate them for a workout. The JBL Headphones app lets you easily EQ the overpowering low frequencies away.

I had no difficulty reproducing the sub-bass tones at the 34-second mark of “Kendrick Lamar’s Loyalty.” The drivers produce the roar with enthusiasm as the synth line descends deeper into the subwoofer. I also found the crisp sound of various vocal performances on the track.

Bill Callahan’s track “Drover” has far less deep bass, which gives me an improved sense of the sound signature. The drums get extra heft, making the track sound full but manageable. The drivers push the bass more solidly than the highs, but the track never sounded muddy.

Sound Quality of JBL Endurance Peak 3

Endurance Peak 3 closely follows my ideal house curve in the mid and high frequencies while playing tracks. However, during my testing, I found a significant deviation in the low frequencies, as the boosted bass is beyond what most users prefer. The sub-bass and the kick are impressively overpowering and sound significantly brasher than other elements while playing Macklemore $ Ryan Lewis’s Gold.

Low frequencies are usually the first to disappear in a noisy atmosphere due to the auditory masking effects. However, you can still hear the bass in your music in these spaces, boosting your gym workout sessions. Instead, you may need to use an EQ setting with less low-frequency emphasis.

Does JBL Endurance Peak 3 support mono mode?

You can use mono mode with these earpieces to listen to music on one earphone and charge the other bud by placing it in the charging case. There are no specific settings to switch on mono mode; you must leave one bud inside the case and the other in your ear. Mono mode also supports the onboard touch controls to change your tracks. The most essential controls will default to the bud in your ear for playback.

Reset your buds if you have difficulty connecting Peak 3 to your device. First, remove both buds from the case and ensure they are powered on and connected. Tap one of the earbuds thrice, pressing and holding for five seconds when you tap for the third time. Put them back in the case as the resetting session is complete, and take them out to pair again with your device.

You can use them while showering because they have an IP68 waterproof rating. They can resist dust and water; you can submerge them in up to 1.5 m of water for thirty minutes. So, they are completely safe to wear while showering and listening to your favorite tracks.
