SoundPEATS Air4 Pro draws on the extremely Apple AirPods Pro for design cues; you won’t be mixing these low-budget earphones with Apple’s pricier or other flagship earpieces. The stippled charging case is slim and easy to carry in jeans, and it feels lighter than high-end options on the market. The glossy plastic on the interior gives them a premium look and betrays their budget status.

They also passed all the baseline usability tests that sometimes raise concerns about premium headphones. The earphones have touch-sensitive areas that allow you to increase or decrease volume. Furthermore, the touch controls and auto-sensors worked flawlessly, with no notable issues over many days of testing. Some touches, like touching and holding the left bud to swap between ambient sound modes, create logical scenes. However, the touch controls do not allow you to skip backward or repeat songs; none are customizable.

Outside the charging case, you can find a reset button and an LED indicator to show the current battery status. It used the usual traffic light system: green is good, yellow is OK, and red means low battery. These LED indicators help you to check your power levels at a glance.

The Air4 Pro boasts superior audio quality optimized by Snapdragon Sound technology at every volume level, specifically for the price range. Its 13mm large drivers produce a solid and rich bass response. This works well against audio across the music range, from bleep ambient electronica to blistering metal. Additionally, you can find three different sound modes: Normal, Adaptive Active Noise Cancellation, and Passthrough Mode (Transparency Mode).

Each mode has its feature to produce distortion-free and clear audio, though I found during my testing that Passthrough Mode does create a slight jeer while engaged, but not enough to cause significant issues. I used Passthrough Mode for at least a few moments because I removed the one bud to listen to my surroundings. However, this mode is ideal for many users to ensure convenience and accessibility.

In the same way, several people like the peace of mind of the Transparency Mode, which is good to see accommodated here. This mode is perfectly usable for users who prefer a less closed audio mode. These earpieces can add plenty of mid-bass and punch to any track, adding fun to your music. While extending deep over the sub-bass, they show a competent performance that can reproduce all notes without empty sub-bass sounds.

The media controls are on the touch-sensitive area of each earphone. Tap the right or left bud once to raise or lower the volume. With a double tap, you can pause or resume the playing song. These controls can be awkward in some situations and accessible to activate accidentally, but fortunately, you can turn them off entirely by installing the SoundPEATS app on your device.

The app allows you to switch between normal modes, such as ANC and Transparent Modes. Press and hold the headset handle to cycle through the modes. Additionally, users can enable adaptive EQ to map their ears with impressive results by using a short series of tones. Gamers can activate the game mode from the app, reducing latency and enhancing gaming or watching online videos.

They provide convenient access to calls and music. The touch services on these earpieces are easy to access, but they were slow to respond during my testing. The brand claims the touch controls work fast enough to be convenient, and the touch protocol is intuitive. However, touch controls could be more responsive. Sometimes, we encourage a problem, and external elements like raincoats activate the touch controls.

The app solves this issue by allowing you to turn off touch controls, which will be a lifesaver. You can activate the Transparency mode by pressing and holding your finger on the left bud’s sensor for 1.5 seconds.

The major problem with the default controls is that you can’t play back the previous song, which puts them behind competing apps and products. However, there is a beep to acknowledge that the track-forward or pause music command has been activated. You can also listen to voice prompts to indicate Gaming Mode, which specifies the On or Off condition of the mode.

In today’s fast-paced world, multitasking is the most necessary element of life. With multipoint connectivity, you can seamlessly transition between different gadgets. These earphones also allow dual-device connectivity, enabling users to switch between their devices easily without reconnection hassles. I tested this feature by pairing the earphones with a phone playing an online video and a tablet streaming a podcast.

Switching between these two devices was fast and smooth, with no lag or confusion. Generally, in complex Bluetooth environments with several competing signals, I noticed irregular drops in connection, which were restored instantly.

To connect a second device, turn off the Bluetooth on the first connected device. The earphones will automatically reenter pairing mode, and you need to repeat the above steps for the second device. After connecting with the second device, turn on the Bluetooth of the first device and reconnect the earphones from the paired list.

ANC’s performance almost matches the best competitors under the $100 budget range. These earbuds perform almost equally to the Sony WF-1000XM4 in the midrange and bass, but they slightly lag in the midrange and upper bass areas. The primary issue remains higher frequencies, which means you still hear speech quite clearly.

Air4 Pro is the strongest at sub-bass frequencies but performs poorly in the mids compared to EarFun Air Pro 3. I experienced a minor glitch, which was also audible in our active noise cancellation test: If you go straight from ambient sound mode to ANC, the latter doesn’t activate. You need to go into normal mode first and then activate ANC.

The Transparency Mode of the earphones worked well during my testing. They boost the surrounding noise from 20 Hz to 2.7 kHz, meaning that at least other people’s voices sound natural and full when activating the mode. Furthermore, the Ambient mode sounds thin amid the 800 Hz and 2.5 kHz boost, but that’s an issue.

Voices appear thin due to earpieces over-boosting the 800 Hz and 2.5 kHz region. However, this is still better than others in the same price range and even expensive earphones like Edifier NeoBuds Pro 2. The only thing that can be disturbing is some artificial noise due to over-boosting the audio signal.

It continues to perform similarly when making calls near busy traffic. Sometimes, my voice gets slightly inaudible, but never to the point of being challenging to understand. The mics’ noise reduction technology only partially cuts background distractions. This means that when I am talking near a crowded road, the person on the other side can still hear the faint shimmery noise of the car’s tires.

They are a good option for making calls in various situations because they mostly cancel out the surrounding noise. However, I recommend Apple AirPods 3 for the best call quality. They have excellent mics and utilize a breakthrough in voice quality with Aptx-Voice. With the six mics and the algorithms of Aptx-Voice, calls are quite awesome.

The charging case allows you to charge them three times, increasing the total playtime to 26 hours. So, the charging case offers around 19.5 hours of playback without the ANC. You can charge the earbuds in 1.5 hours to enjoy the claimed 6.5 hours of playtime. Each earpiece has a 35mAh battery, and the charging case has a 330mAh capacity, smaller than Capsule 3 Pro’s 500mAh case.

SoundPEATS Air4 Pro has an IPX4 waterproof rating to resist dust and water splashes. However, the rating is insufficient for use in heavy rain, swimming pools, or similar intense conditions. So, IPX4 might not be revolutionary; you can only use it for average activities like workout sessions or commuting. The charging case has no waterproof rating, so you must protect them from sweaty jeans.
