Design and Comfort
In the little egg crate, you can find two noise-canceling JBL earbuds. When played on consoles or PCs, there is an extra port for putting in a USB-C dongle to relay 2.4GHz signaling on the earbuds. The design of the JBL Quantum TWS gaming earbuds mirrors what we have come to expect nowadays from most top-tier bud options.
So this means a pair of buds that you can charge from the case for convenience, which can easily fit inside your pocket. They come with three sizes of rubber coverings to match different ear shapes for a comfortable fit. With active noise cancellation, you can block external disturbances while enjoying music. Dual mode helps users connect these buds with two devices simultaneously.
The build quality is mind-boggling, and they can withstand little water splashes with an IPX4 waterproof rating. Someone can find each bud firmer, with a solid matte plastic construction and an inner glint on the top. But they are also incredibly light in hand and in-ear, giving me a weightless feeling, which I didn’t experience among the gaming earbuds in my collection.
Three LED battery indicators at the bottom sit under the primary lip, a USB-C charging connection on one side, and glossy but subtle JBL logo dots on the top. JBL does earn a big thumbs up for having a small notch within the framework to accommodate the 2.4GHz USB-C dongle. That’s something I don’t see all too often in gaming earbuds, and it could be beneficial, given how likely these things are to be lost, particularly out on tour.
Call Quality
It has a set of microphones that particularly impressed me, but you won’t regret it with the dual-beamforming mics. The audio is flawlessly clean and balanced, with good noise reduction on the back channel even when an urgent call is made quickly outside.
The number of mics enhances the voice quality during voice chats and calls. However, it doesn’t feature noise cancellation, meaning the mics don’t isolate background noise in a boisterous atmosphere. Speaking of performance with ANC while listening to the audio content, JBL Quantum TWS headphones excel considerably and significantly cut out most external noise. When it was used in calls more than once, some users complained that it was herding in a lot of noise from outside, while others thought their listening was lovely. In testing a recording, they sounded like typical earbud microphones.
It’s rather average, but one can hardly do a worse job. They are suitable for a phone call or even a chat via Discord on your cell.
Sound Quality
The sound quality that Quantum TWS earbuds basics will be where, most probably, people will find their investment worthwhile. I’ve sampled the Quantum TWS on various platforms, which are excellent for anyone. Even though the surround sound wasn’t quite there for some video games like Call of Duty, I still could hear the directional sound decently on Modern Warfare II on PC, so it is usable. The gunshots were impressive and could be well heard during the chat in-stream.
While on PS5, I found the audio sound to be exact. 3D audio or something to do with PlayStation, they have a good ear for getting as much out of what you plug in as possible. As also noted, the Quantum TWS would seem to work well in its single-player, noncompetitive role when it deploys on a PC or console where every sound bite might be crucial for putting you into action and making your specific decision.
It sounds nice as the little breaker, which could tell about the performance of the music. Indeed, some overpowering mids and highs took place in the case of Asus ROG Cetra earbuds. Some songs initially in the default EQ on Apple Music, Spotify, and even YouTube had these mildly tiny beats that went away after I started tweaking with the different EQ settings.
These earbuds do not come close to matching the sound quality of Sony WF-1000XM4 or even Bose QuietComfort Ear Buds II. These JBL buds perform well in most different music genres and even in calmer ones. Several albums, such as Ghost Bath’s The Golden Number, stood out with subtle guitar work and elevated vocals. Father John Misty’s Hollywood Forever Cemetery Sings was also good because of the driving percussion behind it.
Playtime of JBL Quantum TWS
The manufacturers claim up to 8 hours of playtime, but battery life will give you around 16 hours of use with the charging case. That little earbud speaker is similar to the ones used for Apple AirPods 3 and Razer Hammerhead Pro Hyperspeed. I found the claimed eight hours of playback from JBL during my testing. This 8-hour period lasts about 5 to 6 hours if you want to enjoy ANC.
I was pleasantly surprised when I managed to go through three multi-hour play sessions before replenishing the buds with a new charge. I also discovered that six hours was the best longevity when connected via a 2.4 GHz dongle pairing over Bluetooth, which came in at about 6 hours. It can store another 16 with the storage case, so two additional later rounds can be juiced up without having the cable in reach.
It takes up to 2 hours to recharge the earbuds twice from this charging case, thus adding extra time to battery life for another 16 hours. Just don’t consider you may be using ANC, but this gives an idea of the lifespan they can achieve with a pair of Quantum TWS. Charging the case to total capacity takes approximately two hours. With the fast charge feature, you can enjoy three hours of playtime while charging them for 15 minutes.
Feature Rich App
I used these earbuds several times to deepen my experience after downloading the JBL Headphones app from the App Store (Google also has this application in its Play Store). The device, paired with the earbuds by Bluetooth, provided me with valuable features to make my listening to the best sound as much as possible.
First, I checked my best-fit tool that would play some music and tell me if the earbuds were sealing well in my ear. It enabled me to go around with perfect sound based on the reliability of a proper seal.
Then came the Ear Canal test with a sound or noise analysis in my ear for optimal setting of their noise-cancelation feature. Finally, the Voice Assistant first hinted at what button to press for me to activate Siri. After the basic installation, the app opened to show numerous details and settings, where I can adjust different settings, sound control of varying kinds, view battery life specifics, and more.
The JBL Headphones App is just a fantastic freebie and a must-have that will make users' lives even more pleasurable than they are already. The iOS & Google PlayApp significantly improve the overall experience.
Dual Connectivity
Dual connectivity with Bluetooth and 2.4 GHz wireless is another unique feature with the JBL Quantum TWS earbuds on all Bluetooth headphones, most notably also those now on sale by this manufacturer, namely their Quantum One model. A wireless dongle at 2.4 GHz is also included but carefully placed inside the charging case. The JBL QuantumTWS belongs to a limited number of gaming headsets that come with a 2.4GHz dongle.
As to connect, for example, via Bluetooth and 2.4 GHz wireless, you can set a time or point where the connection is made with several devices to connect to a Bluetooth source, like a phone connected to 2.4 GHz wireless. Still, it does not allow listening simultaneously from both references or when playing.
You will never miss a call, as when calls are made by phone, you can keep an alert sound via the ears after connecting it with dual connectivity. Touch Controls
It is effortless to remove the JBL Quantum TWS earbuds from the case; an operator can connect or pair them even if powered inside the said casing. Controls include calls, play/pause, skip tracks (next/previous), voice assistant, ANC, ambient sound, and Talkthru, controlled via gestures: one-touch, two-touch, three-touch, and extended tap.
Control functions cannot be customized to any gesture of your choice. Instead, you have a choice of 3 different gesture control mode formats. Primary gesture controls for each option have predefined and preset control purposes that can’t be remapped. Four gesture controls per earbud are available, and there is call handling. You can answer the phone, hang up, reject the inbound call, or mute it. One can also switch to zero there, and they are deep-sleep compatible.
Ambient Aware Mode and Noise Cancellation
Ambient Sound Control lets you tap-cycle among your in-ear buds’ four primary sound settings, from Ambient Aware to Noise Cancelling, with a double-tap toggling the “TalkThru” mode on and off. The modes are pretty self-explanatory: Ambient Aware makes it more comfortable to hear noises in the surrounding environment while listening to a sound source, Noise Cancelling blocks out nearby noise to make users’ chosen sound source easier for them themselves to hear, and there is also the talking through mode that reportedly boosts all of the surrounds so as not only can the user quickly understand what is going about without stopping playing his music or taking.
I must admit my lack of enthusiasm towards the previously mentioned Ambient Sound Control modes. Adaptive Noise Canceling is one of the worst I’ve encountered in any headset and not something to boast about. I was generous enough to receive a second pair of review units from JBL when it turned out that the first one must have been defective.
Still, the outcomes with the second group turned out to be identical despite my applying all available ANC diagnostic procedures supplied by the app and making sure my earbuds were rigged firmly. Improvements are not very noticeable, and at best, the Quantum “reduces” some background noise but does not effectively “cancel out” voices or loud noises. When I switched ANC on, the unit was tranquil, and it was hard to notice that ANC was working.
Talk-Thru could work more wonderfully. Music mode allows you to hear everything around you and continue conversations with others while simultaneously hearing your music – that is what it is for. Similarly, the music playback is so feebly that one can barely listen to it, thus making it more annoying.
