Xiaomi AirDots 4 Pro has a stylish and upper-class design. The hues are what one would expect in an office environment: nothing too flashy or showy. Regarding the casing design, it looks like a space capsule and stores the earphones in a vertical position. Earphones are held in their charging case with strong magnets. Equipped with two draws, it sits securely without wobbling.

Toward the bottom of the case is an LED indicator showing the battery level and current charging progress. There is also a pairing button by the USB-C connector. These earphones have the shape of just about every other TWS bud out there, but instead of the curved oval design, Xiaomi AirDots 4 Pro have flat stems with squarish ends, and they, too, carry two colors. The piece facing the ear is matte plastic, somewhat soft. Thus, it was where Xiaomi kept the curves to be more comfortable when in your ear. Regarding design and comfort, Redmi AirDots 2 are a better option than these because they are easy to wear for longer.

As long as you get the size of your ear tip right, we tested them under all kinds of demanding conditions, and they never fell off once. Like all in-ear designs, your ears will tire during lengthy listening periods. However, these earbuds are uncomfortable if you wear them longer.

High-frequency audio sounded crisp, too, even at high volumes. It produces acoustic music and tracks that have plenty of accompanying musical instruments. Weakening the whole of the Dimensional audio feature may help with immersion, especially if you are playing a live concert recording or watching a movie. We didn’t like that everything was so far away, and high-frequency sounds were muted.

Xiaomi says that the AirDots 4 Pro can block out noise of up to 48dB, but the reality is somewhat more complex than this. Most people know noise suppression is handled most effectively with steady, low-frequency sounds. But suddenly, erupting high-pitched sounds cannot be blocked. It detects and blocks ambient noise with three mics on each earphone. Meanwhile, a Voice Pick-up Unit (VPU) listens to your voice while you’re answering calls and when the Voice Detection option is activated. In addition to hardware improvements, the buds also sport an innovative Acoustic Scene Pavilion algorithm. This AI-driven technique can reduce wind noise in phone calls by up to 32.4 km/h. This feature performs satisfactorily in mild breezes but doesn’t look for miracles. The noise cancellation worked fine, even in a noisy environment.

Quite good at suppressing such annoyances, such as your regular gym noise and its irritating music. But outside of the office, the metro and noisy public transport are also challenging to catch above the music you listen to. On the street, only cars passing you may get through the noise canceling. We also used the ANC before a rumbling vacuum cleaner, and the buds handled that well.

The microphone performance of AirDots 4 Pro is very high and suitable for all scenarios. Most significantly, the buds are better at cutting out ambient noise so you can converse in previously impossible ways. However, the environment could be a problem in noisy, windy surroundings. But most kinds of street noise or sounds heard in busy gyms will be okay with people carrying out their business and exchanging information smoothly. These TWS earbuds are compact, and it is their exception, revealing Xiaomi’s focus on delivering high-quality audio experiences.

Zooming in and out with them makes for a great phone call experience, mainly because of the three earbud microphones that don’t blur things out. These earpieces reduce outside noise, so users don’t struggle to talk in noisier places. The user experience is more complete under the enhanced video and gaming performance, without any signs of synchronization problems while playing videos and nearly unnoticeable gaming latency. Furthermore, the on-call quality of the pair is smoothly extended into entertainment and communication.

The microphone quality of these earbuds is worth mentioning. Of all its peers for comparison, this area transcends the norm. These well-designed mics produce a smooth, clear audio output so users can handle calls as cleanly as possible.

It features a modern sensibility and unequivocally employs Bluetooth 5.3 LE, the established standard for many True Wireless Stereo (TWS) earbuds available today. These earbuds with LDAC, SBC, and AAC streaming encode power to support a variety of products effectively and play high-quality audio through distant transmission. The LDAC codec offers up to 990 kbps with a 32-bit depth and is the choice of audiophiles. It can fall back to AAC if your device doesn’t support it. Moreover, the versatility of multi-device connectivity makes it necessary to change devices for streaming music and making calls.

But its connection performance is cause for concern. In practice, the 10-meter line of sight is slowly fired along. As the signal weakens over several rooms, it gradually becomes clear how much you need to have that smartphone to hand. But there is another disadvantage when used outdoors: interruptions and cutoffs are irregular. When Active Noise Cancellation is turned on, these defects are most severe. The cause is not yet clear, but as the earbuds are still in pre-release status, therein is hope that future software updates will solve the problem.

With these network subtleties, the potential to create a seamless user experience for AirDots 4 Pro still shines. The intermittent problems and those related to the in-ear detection tests suggest software problems that can be easily fixed. Xiaomi releases updates for its products frequently, so it’s not unreasonable to assume improvements in the stability of the connection and overall performance of these earbuds. In the increasingly competitive environment of TWS earbuds, it offers an attractive proposition for those who want a balance between high-tech and possible future software updates.

Every earbud has a 53 mAh battery, and the case provides an extra 565 mAh. AirDots 4 Pro has one notable advantage over its competitors: You can power up the charging case with a cable or wirelessly. It can charge by standard Qi, so it should work with most chargers and nearly all phones supporting reverse wireless charging. In our experience, the charging case, as well as the earphones, charge quickly. Xiaomi claims that 5 minutes of charging gives you three hours of continuous playback.

Unfortunately, we have experienced the usable battery life of the buds much less than the claimed 9 hours listening time or a total of 39 hours with the recharging case, which turned up on their specs. However, Xiaomi is true to their word: the testing was done in streaming music in AAC, whether it be HuaQi single earphones and Asir single earphones that they abandoned or other competitors with base prices starting from one hundred dollars. When testing, the buds weren’t even playing a song for four hours straight; other features, like active noise cancellation or Dimensional audio, were turned off. These results are far from what is huffed and puffed about but still excellent.

So, most competitors have similar battery life except the Google Pixel Buds Pro. With ANC on, they can go for more than 7 hours. Without ANC, they can run for more than 9 hours. The charging case provides about 3.7 charges, so the total playback time for music is over 20 hours.

On the other hand, we’ve had software problems with these Xiaomi buds (such as in-ear detection, cutoffs, limited Bluetooth range, and interactive voice), which stopped us short of giving them an unqualified thumbs up. On top of this, the hefty price tag is hard to stomach. The good thing is that nearly all our problems were software-related. Once new firmware versions enter service, they will resolve most of them. Knowing that Xiaomi often puts its products on sale, these might come cheap someday.
